Why Core Web Vitals still matter
Core Web Vitals are a tie-breaker, not a growth lever. They rarely beat relevance, but they can decide a close ranking and they strongly affect conversion.
The three metrics that count
- LCP measures when the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds on mobile.
- INP measures responsiveness. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
- CLS measures visual stability. Aim for under 0.1.
Fixes that actually work
- Serve the hero image as a preloaded, correctly sized modern format.
- Reserve fixed dimensions for images, embeds and ad slots.
- Remove render-blocking JavaScript from the critical path.
- Cache static assets with immutable headers at the edge.
- Split long tasks that block the main thread.
What is mostly noise
Total page weight and synthetic Lighthouse scores without field data are weak proxies. Always prioritise real-user metrics segmented by template and device.
Measure by template. One slow article layout affects every article that uses it.
